| The Cornerstone to Sobriety Beginner's Group
started out as a very small (4-5 attendees) meeting in the Choice Skyward
Building after the IOP class let out. Paul D. had kept the meeting going
for some time and then it seemed that in Jan. of '03 a group of young
people kind of all came in together. With a few heads together it was decided that with the help from the "people who came before us" us newcomers could turn this meeting into a group. At our first business meeting 18 people attended. Zach W., Mary C., Josh Y., Nate A., Casey T., Casey H., Patrick B., Rob G., Robbie R., Katie W., Lori E., Janet H., Paul D., Bob C., Sharon S., Susan H., Mark Z., & Boyd B. Sharon let us have the meeting at her home since we didn't have our own yet. All but 2 of our service positions were filled at that first meeting. We found a larger meeting room almost across the street at St. Pete's Episcopal Church. The meeting takes place on Thursday's at 6:30 pm. We decided it to be a beginner's meeting, focusing on the 1st 3 steps because of the attendance we get after IOP lets out. Also in our area there seems to be an abundance of young (ages17-30) new people coming in. Our group name was chosen because we were basing the meeting on Steps 1,2,& 3 (The cornerstone on which we build the arch to pass through to freedom!) Out of the 18 founding members, 5 are still very active, 3 have moved away and continued on with sobriety, some have moved on, and still many more have joined. We are very much a beginning group of District 15 and are continuing to stay very active. Our attendance now is usually around 30-35 people, and much larger on anniversary nights! |
