Scarborough Route 1 Group
Thursday's 7:30 pm
West Scarborough United Methodist Church
US Route 1 at Dunston Corner
Scarborough
Closed/Discussion/Handicapped Accessible
| The first meeting was held in April 1983 at Robbins' Flea Market on US
Route 1 in Scarborough, which is now Cliff's Antique Market. There were 7
people at the initial covening: Rickie H., Don M., Jack B., Sam L., Harold
S., Cena R., and Al R. In the fall of 1984 the group moved to the United Methodist Church on Route 1, Scarborough at Dunston Corner. Over the next six years, the number of meeting attendees increased to about 35. In May, 1990 the meeting was relocated to the American Legion Hall on Libby Road, near the Scarborough Marsh preserve. For the ensuing eleven years alcoholics gathered there on Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:00 PM in a rustic, log cabin-like setting. The meeting continued to be ma closed, discussion type; and in 1999 it became a closed topic discussion session. During March of 2001 the group again shifted its gatherings back to the Methodist Church near Dunston Corner. Since its inception, the group has been newcomer and service oriented, and has had as members; Cena R. (Maine's first woman AA delegate), and Al R. (Founder and first manager of the Portland Central Service Office). These two have assisted thousands of beginners during their thirty plus years of sobriety. The meeting continues today for one hour, still on Thursday nights. At the onset, the Preamble, beginning parts of Chapters 3 and 5, and the long form of the month's Tradition are read, followed by self introductions of all present. A candle is lit for the still sick and suffering, a chairperson qualifies and suggests a topic, then sharing commences. The meeting ends with a reminder on anonimity and the Lord's Prayer. There are currently some 40 group members and 75 or so attendees. The group has monthly business meetings, which include GSR and Treasurer's Reports, discussion of job coverage and old & new business. Contributions are regularly made to the service structure; and group members go on commitments once a month. The group holds group anniversary observance and gratitude potluck
supper nights annually, and does a group inventory. We hope that our meeting
can continue to be a haven for alcoholics, in keeping with the Twelve
Traditions. |
